English's Restaurant

Just at the entrance to the Lanes (old) is a famous restaurant called English's and this is their unique signage - any guesses which rhyme this is from?

  1. I think its from Alice in Wonderland. The jabberwocky. What kind of food does the restaurant sell?

  2. It's from The Walrus and The Carpenter, the poem in Lewis Carroll's 'Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There'(1872). Particularly pertinent as Mr. Carroll was once a temporary resident of Brighton, although long after most of his books were written, contrary to the popular myth.
English's sells seafood, especially oysters which are depicted on the sign, hence the quotation.
